Marissa Mayer embraces Met Gala punk theme with bright rainbow streaks - but the rebellious hairstyle didn't work on everyone

Some 800 celebrities and supermodels walked up the long staircase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art
for the annual Costume Institute last night, but Marissa Mayer was one guest that stood out.

Channeling all things punk, the 37-year-old
Yahoo! CEO punctuated her one-shoulder red gown with thick orange and
blue streaks through her otherwise immaculate blond bob.

Meanwhile Lily Collins and Kerry Washington also embraced the
evening's Punk: Chaos to Couture theme with bold bits of color layered
through their hair, adding some attitude and (at least temporarily) red
carpet rebellion.

Ms Washington's experimentation matched her purple Vera Wang gown, 'to have a punk moment,' she told host Hilary Rhoda on the red carpet. 'I've never rocked purple
streaks before!'

Miss
Collins, 24, opted for bright blue streaks to complement her embellished
Moschino gown and vintage Moschino biker jacket, decorated with badges,
safety pins, studs and graffiti.

Even Ivanka Trump embraced the trend, with deep green layers, and model Lily Cole, who arrived with original punk Vivienne Westwood, added some pink highlights around her face.

Tentatively
touching on the hairstyle was Diane Kruger, who dip-dyed her long blond
ponytail in fuchsia pink - adding a colorful touch to her black Chanel
dress.

Going all out was Nicole Richie, who teamed her white Topshop column gown with a shocking silver updo, and Miley Cyrus, whose spiky blond tips lent an extra punk edge to her Marc Jacobs fishnet dress.

Karlie Kloss, who wore Louis Vuitton
and was equally as keen to embrace the Gala's punk theme, died her
mousey brown hair, black.

'I died my hair black for
tonight, with spray paint!' she told Ms Rhoda. 'I had to embrace the punk. The hair was the
hard part, the dress was a piece of cake.'

Ginnifer Goodwin, who wore a silver
and black sequin Tory Burch gown, also added some extra high voltage to
her relatively conservative dress a jet black pixie crop and dark eyes.

She joked: 'It's a good night for having short hair!'

Meanwhile Anne Hathaway debuted her brand new peroxide pixie crop at last night's Gala - channeling punk with the Debbie Harry inspired look.

Dying
her brown Fantine tresses an unexpected shade of platinum, the actress,
who wore a 1992 Valentino gown to the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit,
told MailOnline: '
I've wanted to do it forever!'

The 30-year-old, who was spotted with dark hair at La Esquina in Soho on Saturday
night, admitted she took the plunge on Sunday.
'I love it!' she said.

'I don't know if you can tell by the
looks of me, but...' she told Ms Rhoda on the red carpet, 'Debbie Harry was kind of [the inspiration].'

Ms Hathaway was greeted by her Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt, who squealed: 'Oh
my god! I love it!'

Designer Valentino Garavani, who dressed the star in a gown from his 1992 archives, admitted he was an avid supporter of the change.

'She asked me what I thought and I said
absolutely, she should do it,' he revealed.
